Black Panther co-writer/director Ryan Coogler has signed on to write and direct the sequel, with production targeted to begin in late 2019 or early 2020. Marvel reportedly desired to keep the creative team behind the wildly successful first venture into Wakanda together for the sequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Coogler quietly closed a deal with Marvel to make a return to Wakanda to both write and direct Black Panther 2. Coogler is set to begin writing the script in early 2019, though whether Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole will also return to write alongside Coogler remains unknown at this time.

Coogler’s return as writer/director for Black Panther 2 should come as no surprise, as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige expressed his desire for Coogler to direct a sequel prior even to the theatrical release of Black Panther.

The timeline for Black Panther 2 remains unclear, as Marvel has yet to officially announce the next slate of films for the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond the still untitled Avengers 4 and Spider-Man: Far From Home, though a shuffling of Disney’s release calendar has suggested a release date of Feb. 12, 2021 for the sequel.

With T’Challa having fallen victim to Thanos’ deadly finger-snap, Black Panther 2 remains in a curious position with no one currently holding the mantle of Black Panther, though the events of Avengers 4 will likely have a large impact on the plot direction of the film.
