The showrunners of the Netflix animated series The Dragon Prince have been paying attention to viewer feedback to the first season and may change the show’s animation style accordingly.

Co-creators and showrunners Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond are aware the fantasy series’ reduced frame rate has been a common source of criticism and may adopt a more traditional frame rate for future episodes should the series be renewed for a second season.

“I think there’s a lot of valid feedback about the animation,” admitted Ehasz in an interview with The Verge. “You have a lot of people responding to the character designs, and the backgrounds, and the beautiful world, the cinematic storyboarding that our great director Giancarlo Volpe and his team has brought out. And then you do have people responding to some of the frame rate decisions.”

Featuring a blend of CGI and cel-shaded animation, the new series intentionally lowered the frame rate of the visuals to make the combined animation appear more real to viewers with mixed results.

“In the future, if-slash-when we’re making more episodes, we’re not gonna be able to vastly change how we make it, but we’re definitely gonna have an eye toward specific shots and scenes[:] Can we make them more fluid? Can we make them exceed the expectations that were set?” continued Ehasz. “We’re definitely hearing it, and if we’re given the opportunity, we’re gonna work to improve it, within all possible bounds.”

Featuring the voices of Jack DeSena, Sasha Rojen, Paula Burrows, Jesse Inocalla, Racquel Belmonte, Luc Roderique, and Jason Simpson, The Dragon Prince is available now on Netflix.
