WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Deadpool 2, in theaters now.

Early versions of Deadpool 2 featured a much larger storyline for Jack Kesy’s Black Tom Cassidy. However, that storyline was trimmed down significantly due to concerns about the film’s budget.

On The Empire Film Podcast, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds was asked about Black Tom Cassidy’s role in Deadpool 2. “Black Tom was just in the movie as a supervillain who has incredible powers and all sorts of stuff,” Reynolds answered. “It was the fucking studio that said, ‘You guys are over-budget. You can’t afford this whole….’ So his whole storyline got trimmed way back and Jack Kesy who played him, who’s such a sport, you know, stayed on in the role.”

“I called Jack and was like, ‘Jack, I hate to tell you this, man, you know, we’re cutting out most of Black Tom,’ and this is before we shot,” Reynolds continued. “So, you know, I said to him, ‘If you want to play the role still, it’s like 3 or 4 days of, you know, work. Obviously if you want to duck out I totally understand.’ He was like, ‘No, no. I’m in.’ He was so sweet to do it cause he’s an amazing actor. Yeah, so Black Tom Cassidy, we did end up using his name for kind of a running joke in the movie where Deadpool sort of falsely accuses Cable of being racist, and you know, we sort of thought that was somewhat ridiculous.”

Reynolds’ comments are in line with previous comments from screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who explained in an interview with CBR that previous iterations of the script had Black Tom as the primary villain, but ultimately they felt the movie was overstuffed with villains and the CG work for the character was really expensive, so they chose to spend that money on Juggernaut instead.

In theaters now, director David Leitch’s Deadpool 2 stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular Deadpool, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Stefan Kapičić as Colossus, Zazie Beetz as Domino, Julian Dennison as Russell and Josh Brolin as Cable.
