In a recent Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, Annihilation director Alex Garland teased that he’d be interested in tackling a Swamp Thing movie, should it ever become a possibility.

Despite only directing two films thus far, Alex Garland has built an impressive resume ever since he broke into Hollywood back in the early 2000s, having written the screenplay for films such as 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Never Let Me Go. It wasn’t until he stepped behind the camera to helm Ex Machina, however, that Garland truly gained recognition for his work. Having both written and directed the film, Garland’s name quickly shot to the top of various fan wish-lists, eager to see the director tackle a comic book film. Yet, his next feature ended up being an adaption of Annihilation, based on the book of the same name by author Jeff VanderMeer. Now, it appears that Garland may finally be ready to direct his own comic book film going by a recent AMA session on Reddit. When asked if he had the chance to write/direct a film based on any comic book character, which would it be? Garland simply responded by saying: Swamp Thing.

While the DC Comics character famously had a live action film back in 1982 courtesy of the legendary Wes Craven, the character hasn’t appeared on the big screen since then, although he’s expected to be a part of DC’s Justice League Dark, should that movie ever come to fruition. Still, while a Swamp Thing film by Garland could prove to be interesting, it wouldn’t be the first time he’s taken to adapting a comic character. In fact, Garland penned 2012’s Dredd starring Karl Urban, a film that managed to quickly become a cult classic despite the poor box office. Prior to that, Garland even penned an episode of Batman: Black and White. Of course, a director proclaiming interest in adapting a character doesn’t mean it’s entirely feasible. Following the poor reception of Justice League, Warner Bros. and DC appear to be revisiting their original plans for the DC Extended Universe and it’s unknown which films will move into production and which of the others that have already been announced will simply find themselves stuck in development hell. With Garland showing interest in bringing Swamp Thing to life on the big screen again, though, perhaps DC may approach him to tackle Justice League Dark?

Written and directed by Garland, Annihilation stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson and Tuva Novotny. The film opens Feb. 23.
