On the heels of his shared Academy Award nomination for best adapted screenplay, a first for a superhero film, Logan director James Mangold has taken aim at one of the modern staples of the genre: post-credits scenes.

Appearing Thursday in Los Angeles at Audi’s 2018 Writers Guild Association Beyond Words Panel, the filmmaker described those sequences as “really fucking embarrassing” in his response to a question about what types of movies he doesn’t want to make.
“The idea of making a movie that would fucking embarrass me, that’s part of the anesthetizing of this country or the world,” Mangold said, according to CinemaBlend. “That’s further confirming what they already know and tying in with other fucking products and selling them the next movie while you’re making this movie, and kind of all that shit that I find really fucking embarrassing. Like, that audiences are actually asking for scenes in end credits when those scenes were first developed for movies that suck, so they put something extra at the end to pick up the scores when the movie couldn’t end right on its own fucking feet.”
Not holding back, he lamented that audiences have become so conditioned — or “addicted,” in his words — to expect end-credits scenes, which he considers to be cheating. “It’s fucking embarrassing,” Mangold continued. “It means you couldn’t land your fucking movie is what it means. Even if you got 100,000 Twitter addicts who are gambling on what fucking scene is going to happen after the fucking credits, it’s still cheating.”

The director previously addressed post-credits sequences, and why Logan doesn’t contain any, although not in such blunt terms. Mangold had firsthand experience with those “100,000 Twitter addicts” ahead of the film’s release, when he threw cold water on persistent rumors that additional sequences had been shot, and possibly added following critics’ screenings.
“The only way we came out with a different movie was trying to do it differently,” Mangold explained in March 2017. “So I was pretty fanatical about saying, ‘If this is how these other movies are doing it, we’re going the other way.’ If there’s normally a cameo or an end-credit scene, we’re not doing that. That’s essentially turning it into a product that has to come out of the widget machine the same way every time and that’s not how the best movies are going to get made … in any genre.”
Mangold, whose credits also include Cop Land, Girl, Interrupted, 3:10 to Yuma and The Wolverine, wrotee the Logan screenplay with Scott Frank and Michael Green. The winners of the 90th Academy Awards will be announced March 4 in a ceremony broadcast live on ABC.
