Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson broke convention by commencing The Last Jedi directly after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, foregoing the usual time jump between films. As a result, the death of Han Solo in The Force Awakens became a point of curiosity for fans, who wondered how Johnson would handle it.

Johnson explained in an interview with Collider that there were never plans for a Han Solo funeral in The Last Jedi. “[There was no debate of showing Han Solo’s funeral], just because pacing-wise it didn’t have a place,” Johnson said.

Johnson also touched on Star Wars‘ history of quickly moving through moments of grief and mourning. “It’s tough in Star Wars because I always think about the mourning that Luke gives to Ben’s death, which is all of four-and-a-half seconds before, ‘Come on kid we’re not out of this yet’ and then boom, you’re into ‘Yay, woo-hoo! Don’t get cocky!’” Johnson explained. “There’s the moment for it, but it’s not long. We don’t have time for our sorrows, commanders. That’s kind of the thing of Star Wars; you don’t really linger on grief because you’re moving forward.”

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Benicio Del Toro as ‘DJ’, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, and the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. The film is in theaters worldwide.
