According to the actor’s sister, Heath Ledger was looking forward to reprising his critically acclaimed role as the Joker after The Dark Knight.

In an interview with, Kate Ledger shared details of her final conversation with him before his death as she promoted the I Am Heath Ledger documentary. “I spoke to him the night before [he died] and we were laughing and joking. He was so proud of what he had done in Batman. And I know he had plans for another Batman,” she revealed.

“He loved working with Chris Nolan and Christian Bale and Gary Oldman. He just had the best time ever doing that film,” she added. “When he came home at Christmas he couldn’t wait to tell us all about it and he was doing the voice and laughing, showing me all the rushes. We had a great time.”

Ledger died just before the film premiered and his performance posthumously won him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the role. His Joker survived at the end of The Dark Knight after successfully corrupting Harvey Dent. He was taken into custody, which The Dark Knight Rises novelization confirmed to be Arkham Asylum.

In the past, fans have speculated whether he would have returned for the third movie, with writer David Goyer and even Nolan himself hinting that he would have indeed come back as the villain. The third installment ended up going to Tom Hardy’s Bane in the wake of Ledger’s death.
